Studies of the Anthropocene foreground how population growth and the Great Acceleration in the past few decades have given rise to crises such as climate change, energy depletion and environmental destruction. The crises expose certain deficiencies in the tradition of humanism on the one hand and on the other hand force us to confront issues such as shortage of crops, change of production, concern of food safety as well as transformation of agri-food industry. This project envisions an alternative of agricultural humanities under the impact of the Anthropocene and entertains emergent possibilities of agricultural renovation from two aspects.
1. Cross-disciplinary reflection and imagination of agricultural humanities
Endeavors are made to explore the concept of the Anthropocene and other related issues from the angle of social sciences and the humanities. In addition to reflection on how the humanist tradition might have colluded with the belief in anthropocentrism to the exclusion of other species and the environment, attention is also riveted on problems such as agri-food crisis, soil revolution, organic farming as well as sustainable agriculture.
2. Sustainable management of new agricultural practices
In response to problems such as radical climate change, adaptation of agricultural production and concern of food safety, events are organized around issues such as transformation of farming production and emergence of creative agricultural practices so as to renovate culture of farm villages and to promote environmental sustainability.
