The First Domestic Probiotics for Cross-Agricultural, Fishery and Animal Husbandry Products of Which Technology Was Transferred from NCHU and Agricultural Technology Research Institute to President Biotech International Investme

National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) and Agricultural Technology Research Institute (ATRI) jointly developed the first domestic probiotics that can be applied to crops, livestock and aquatic products. After 3 years of field experiments, the probiotics has been proven to help prevent plant diseases, strengthen the immunity of pigs and chickens, improve the meat quality and quantity, and boost the breeding efficiency of milkfish and white shrimp. On September 14, NCHU, ATRI and President Biotech International Investment Co., Ltd.(大統國際生技有限公司) signed a technology non-exclusively transfer license to launch a new generation of agricultural probiotics to protect the agriculture, fishery and animal husbandry industries in an all-round way.

NCHU is a worldwide leader in the agricultural technology. ATRI is regarded as the “Industrial Technology Research Institute in the agricultural sector.” With the support of Ministry of Science and Technology, NCHU and ATRI implemented the “Application of Probiotic Microbiomes in Agriculture” Project to develop a series of Bacillus subtilis strains for multiple applications on health care, crop safety, circular agriculture, livestock and poultry breeding, and aquaculture. The application efficiency is attested by scientific experiments, product promotion and the market competitiveness enhanced.

In the past, probiotic strains were mostly used in a single industry. This Project integrates manpower in professional fields such as plant pathology, pesticide testing, aquatic, livestock and poultry breeding, and fermentation mass production, launching large-scale and long-term cross-industry experiments. NCHU and ATRI, forming a rare model in domestic academia-private sector cooperation, share technology and resources without hoarding information and thereby accomplish quite fruitful results.

The technology about series of Bacillus subtilis strains transferred this time, including liquid, powder and granular spray formulations of microbial preparations, has been proven for use as plant protection agents to successfully reduce the amount of pathogenic bacteria in crops and induce apoptosis (cell death) of pathogenic fungi. It can also be used as an additive for livestock, poultry and aquatic feed to effectively enhance the growth and disease resistance of animals and plants and improve the breeding environment. ATRI has its affiliated Agro-Microbial Fermentation Plant and Biologics Toxicology & Physicochemical Properties GLP Laboratory participate in building the aforementioned technology. In addition to assisting in the development of research results commercialization technology, ATRI can also provide the industry with services such as key microbial raw materials, production process, product physicochemical test and toxicity test of microbial products during the development of new products, being very helpful to the industrialization of agricultural microbial products.
