NCHU Ranked No. 1 Nationwide in Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Animal Husbandry in Global Views Monthly University Leaders Survey
National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) has been named the top university in Taiwan for agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and animal husbandry in the Global Views Monthly 2025 “University Leaders Peer Review” survey. The honor was presented by Minister of Education Dr. Ying-Yao Cheng at an award ceremony attended by College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Dean Dr. Chih-Feng Chen and College of Veterinary Medicine Dean Dr. Ter-Hsin Chen.
The Global Views Monthly “University Leaders Peer Review” is one of Taiwan’s most influential higher education reputation rankings. This year, presidents, vice presidents, and senior administrators from 126 universities and colleges participated, evaluating institutions across 14 key academic fields.
Founded in 1919 with a strong foundation in agriculture and forestry, NCHU has supported Taiwan’s agricultural development for over a century. It is one of the few comprehensive universities in Taiwan to house Colleges of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Veterinary Medicine, and Medicine. To date, seven alumni from its agricultural and life sciences programs have been elected Academicians of Academia Sinica.
NCHU continues to advance interdisciplinary development under the “One Health” concept, integrating environmental, animal, and human health to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The university’s commitment to academic excellence is reflected in its QS World University Ranking, which places its agriculture and forestry programs among the top 151–200 globally, and in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), where its plant and animal science, agricultural science, and environmental ecology disciplines rank in the world’s top 1%.
In recent years, supported by Taiwan’s Higher Education Sprout Project, NCHU has strengthened its focus on plant, animal, and agricultural biotechnology—securing the highest level of national funding in this area. The university has established specialized centers including innovation and development center of sustainable agriculture (IDCSA), advanced plant and food crop biotechnology center, iEGG and animal biotechnology research center. It has also recruited seven internationally renowned scholars and partnered with leading institutions such as University College Dublin (UCD) and Texas A&M University (TAMU), expanding international research and talent networks.
In line with Taiwan’s national sustainability goals, NCHU was awarded top funding under the National Science and Technology Council’s flagship AI program and established the Smart and Sustainable New Agriculture R&D Center. The center uses AI technologies for smart diagnostics, cultivation, and farming to achieve energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and labor savings. NCHU also operates Taiwan’s only national-level food safety testing platform, providing comprehensive “farm-to-table” testing services.
NCHU is a leader in veterinary education as well. It is the first university in Asia to offer a transnational dual-degree program in veterinary medicine with Kansas State University and Iowa State University. Multiple students have already earned dual degrees and passed the U.S. veterinary licensing exam, marking a milestone in the internationalization of veterinary education in Taiwan.
Additionally, the university has Taiwan’s most comprehensive faculty and research capacity in natural carbon sinks and net-zero technologies. In 2022, it established the nation’s first College of Circular Economy and set a goal to achieve net-zero emissions campus-wide by 2040—ten years ahead of Taiwan’s national 2050 target. These efforts have earned NCHU numerous honors, including the National Sustainable Development Award, the University Sustainability Report Platinum Award, and the Taiwan Sustainable University Award.
